You can use a Spanish bank account to pay your rent and utilities or buy your groceries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There are 2 types of bank accounts in Spain:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li>a resident account (for people who live in Spain)<\/li>\n<li>a non-resident account (for people who live abroad)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s up to you to decide which account you prefer. Keep in mind that a <strong>resident<\/strong> bank account gives you more flexibility, whereas the <strong>non-resident<\/strong> account is easier to open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><u>When opening a bank account you can opt for the following:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li>Cuenta bancaria o Cuenta corriente (current account) \u2013 the most standard account that you can use for your everyday expenses, like groceries or going out for dinner.<\/li>\n<li>Cuenta de ahorros (savings account) \u2013 the account to put your savings on as it offers interest on your money.<\/li>\n<li>Cuenta nomina (salary account) \u2013 this account is meant to receive your paycheck from your employer.<\/li>\n<li>Cuenta de dep\u00f3sito (deposit account) \u2013 this is like a savings account, but with fewer options for accessing the money. For funds that need to be held securely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><u>What do you need in order to open a bank account in Spain?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">To open your resident account, you need the following documents:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li>A valid identity card (e.g. your passport)<\/li>\n<li>A valid Spanish address<\/li>\n<li>Your NIE number (N\u00famero de Identificaci\u00f3n de Extranjero), as a proof you\u2019re officially registered in Spain<\/li>\n<li>Proof of your income or employment status<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">Be aware that your documents need to be in Spanish. So make sure to make some Spanish friends to help you (or learn the language yourself, vamos!).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><u>How much does opening a bank account in Spain cost?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The costs of opening a bank account in Spain vary per bank. Some banks even have fee-free basic accounts or student accounts with a discount.
